Globe Valve RFQs: Which Thread Details Must Be Confirmed Before Ordering

Thread specifications can appear to be a small part of a globe valve purchase, yet a mismatch between the valve port and connecting pipe can complicate installation, affect joint sealing, and require changes to the piping arrangement. At Chisheng, we encourage buyers to define connection requirements clearly before requesting a quotation. A detailed request for quotation (RFQ) gives our team a reliable basis for checking product compatibility and confirming the intended configuration.

A NPT Thread Globe Valve uses National Pipe Taper threads for a threaded connection. These threads are designed to engage through their tapered profiles, with suitable thread sealant generally used where a pressure-tight joint is required. Buyers should confirm more than the nominal size: thread type, applicable standard, mating connection, pressure and temperature conditions, and inspection requirements all deserve attention.

1. Confirm the Exact Thread Type

Thread designations can look similar while describing different connection geometries. Specifying only a pipe size may leave room for interpretation during quotation or production.

  • Thread series: State NPT explicitly rather than using a general term such as threaded connection.
  • Male or female connection: Identify whether the valve requires external threads, internal threads, or a particular combination.
  • Mating component: Confirm the thread specification of the pipe, fitting, or equipment connected to the valve.
  • Thread direction: Specify right-hand or left-hand threads where the application requires it. Standard NPT designations normally indicate right-hand threads unless otherwise stated.

ASME B1.20.1 covers dimensions and gauging for several inch-based pipe thread series, including NPT. It is useful to name the applicable standard in the RFQ and verify that the selected thread series matches the mating component.

2. Specify the Nominal Size and Thread Dimensions

NPT nominal pipe size is not the same as the measured outside diameter of the pipe. Buyers should therefore avoid using a caliper measurement alone to determine the required thread designation.

Include these details in the purchase inquiry:

  • Nominal pipe size: State the required size, such as 1/4 inch, 1/2 inch, or 1 inch.
  • Thread standard: Identify ASME B1.20.1 or the specific standard required by the project.
  • Thread engagement: Confirm that the connection geometry is suitable for the intended mating component.
  • Port configuration: State the inlet and outlet connection sizes, including any differences between them.

NPT threads have a nominal taper of 1 in 16 measured on the diameter. Thread pitch and dimensions vary by nominal size, so the required designation should be checked against the applicable standard rather than estimated from appearance.

3. Review Pressure, Temperature, and Service Conditions

Correct threads do not automatically make a globe valve suitable for every pipeline. The complete valve configuration must meet the service requirements, including the pressure boundary, body material, trim, and connection limitations.

  • Design pressure: Provide the specified pressure and required valve rating.
  • Operating temperature: State the normal range and any relevant temperature extremes.
  • Process medium: Identify the fluid and any corrosive or otherwise demanding service conditions.
  • Material requirements: Specify the required body and trim materials according to the application.
  • Applicable codes: Identify the design and testing standards required by the project.

At Chisheng, we recommend reviewing these details alongside the thread specification. A connection that fits mechanically may still be unsuitable for the system's pressure, temperature, or process medium.

4. Establish Thread Inspection Requirements

Thread quality should be assessed against the specified standard rather than visual appearance alone. Incorrect taper, pitch, or functional diameter can affect assembly and sealing performance.

Buyers can clarify the following inspection points before placing an order:

  • Confirm the required thread gauging method and acceptance criteria.
  • Check that thread surfaces are free from damage, burrs, and defects that could interfere with assembly.
  • Specify any required dimensional inspection records or quality documents.
  • Identify the applicable pressure-testing requirements for the complete valve.

ASME B1.20.1 includes gauging provisions for NPT threads. Thread gauging and valve pressure testing serve different purposes, so the RFQ should address each requirement separately where applicable.

5. Clarify Thread Sealant and Assembly Requirements

NPT joints intended to provide pressure-tight connections generally use an appropriate thread sealant during assembly. The selected sealant must be compatible with the process medium, operating temperature, and connected materials.

  • Sealant compatibility: Confirm the permitted sealant type for the application.
  • Assembly instructions: Establish the required installation procedure and tightening guidance.
  • Mating threads: Ensure the connecting pipe or fitting follows the required thread specification.
  • Service restrictions: Identify any special requirements for hazardous fluids, elevated temperatures, or other demanding conditions.

Excessive tightening can damage threaded components or impair the joint's sealing function. Assembly requirements should therefore follow the applicable instructions and engineering specification rather than relying on additional wrench force.

6. Prepare a Complete RFQ Checklist

Chisheng recommends including the following information in the initial inquiry to reduce technical clarification during quotation:

  • Globe valve type and intended application
  • Nominal size and NPT thread designation
  • Male or female thread configuration
  • Applicable thread standard and edition
  • Design pressure and operating temperature
  • Process medium and material requirements
  • Inspection, testing, and documentation requirements
  • Any special assembly or sealant restrictions

Conclusion

A clear RFQ helps our team at Chisheng assess whether the requested globe valve connection matches the intended piping arrangement and service conditions. Confirming thread type, nominal size, mating connection, applicable standards, and inspection criteria provides a practical foundation for technical review.

Before requesting a quotation, prepare the relevant piping details and project specifications. Chisheng can then review the stated requirements, clarify unresolved connection details, and provide a proposal based on the agreed configuration.
